Sudan Reports 201 New COVID-19 Cases; 1,365 Total Cases and 70 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 201 new COVID-19 cases and six new deaths on Sunday, 10 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 1,365 and the total number of deaths to 70.

According to the ministry, out of the 201 newly reported cases, 174 are from Khartoum, 15 from Sennar, 10 from El Gezira, one from El Gadarif and one from Blue Nile. Out of the six newly reported deaths, four are from Khartoum, one from El Gadarif and one from Sennar.

The ministry also reported 30 new recoveries. To date, 149 have recovered.

Out of the total 1,365 positive cases in Sudan, 1,149 are from Khartoum, 55 from El Gezira, 42 from North Kordofan, 35 from Sennar, 32 from El Gadarif, 16 from South Darfur, eight from River Nile, seven from Ash Shamaliyah, five from West Kordofan, five from North Darfur, two from West Darfur, two from East Darfur, two from White Nile, one from Red Sea, one from South Kordofan, one from Central Darfur and one from Blue Nile. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government also announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors are closed for three weeks with the exception of those in the healthcare, and food and beverage sectors. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
