Sudan Reports 215 New COVID-19 Cases; 7,435 Total Cases and 468 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 215 new COVID-19 cases and nine new deaths on Saturday, 13 June 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 7,435 and the total number of deaths to 468.

The ministry also reported 215 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,720.

On 1 June, the Sovereign Council extended the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum until 18 June 2020. On 14 June, Sudan announced that it will keep its airports closed to international and internal scheduled commercial flights for another two weeks until 28 June.

According to the ministry, out of the 215 newly reported cases, 165 are from Khartoum, 19 from El Gezira, 11 from the Red Sea, eight from El Gadarif, five from the White Nile, four from Ash Shamaliyah, two from the River Nile and one from West Kordofan. Out of the 20 newly reported deaths, seven are from Khartoum, seven from El Gezira, four from the Red Sea, one from Sennar and one from Kassala.

Out of the total 7,435 positive cases in Sudan, 5,666 are from Khartoum, 676 from El Gezira, 206 from El Gadarif, 150 from Sennar, 145 from North Kordofan, 117 from North Darfur, 101 from the White Nile, 89 from the Red Sea, 63 from Kassala, 59 from the River Nile, 36 from South Darfur, 30 from Ash Shamaliyah, 28 from West Darfur, 28 from East Darfur, 22 from West Kordofan, 17 from the Blue Nile, seven from South Kordofan and four from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
