Sudan Reports 226 New COVID-19 Cases; 5,026 Total Cases and 286 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 226 new COVID-19 cases and 24 new deaths on Saturday, 30 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 5,026 and the total number of deaths to 286.

The ministry also reported 151 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,423.

According to the ministry, out of the 226 newly reported cases, 171 are from Khartoum, 22 from El Gezira, 11 from North Kordofan, seven from North Darfur, seven from the White Nile, five from the River Nile, and three from El Gadarif. Out of the 24 newly reported deaths, 22 are from Khartoum, one from El Gezira, and one from South Kordofan.

Out of the total 5,096 positive cases in Sudan, 3,965 are from Khartoum, 357 from El Gezira, 154 from El Gadarif, 135 from North Kordofan, 108 from Sennar, 68 from North Darfur, 50 from the White Nile, 40 from Kassala, 35 from South Darfur, 24 from West Darfur, 22 from the River Nile, 15 from Ash Shamaliyah, 14 from East Darfur, 11 from West Kordofan, 10 from Red Sea, eight from the Blue Nile, six from South Kordofan and four from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors has closed with the exception of those in healthcare, and food and beverage. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from Tuesday, 19 May. 

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
