Sudan Reports 314 New COVID-19 Cases; 9,573 Total Cases and 602 Deaths

On the early morning of 2 July 2020, the Federal Ministry of Health revealed the latest COVID-19 reports from 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29 June, which, according to the ministry, were delayed to address the reasons for the low number of suspected cases examined in the last two weeks, in coordination with relevant authorities.

In addition, the delay was a result of the ministry’s efforts to increase the diagnostic capacity to accommodate routine examination of suspicious cases of those in Sudan as well as those who recently returned from abroad during the temporary opening of the Khartoum International Airport last week as part of the evacuation flights to allow resident stuck abroad to return to Sudan.

On 25 June, the ministry reported 57 new COVID-19 cases, four new deaths and 109 new recoveries.

On 26 June, the ministry reported six new COVID-19 cases, eight new deaths and 102 new recoveries.

On 27 June, the ministry reported 52 new COVID-19 cases, three new deaths and 155 new recoveries.

On 28 June, the ministry reported 126 new COVID-19 cases, five new deaths and 164 new recoveries.

On 29 June (the latest report), the ministry reported 73 new COVID-19 cases, 10 new deaths and 62 new recoveries.

In total, with the latest reports from 25 to 29 June, the ministry reports 314 new COVID-19 cases, 30 new deaths and 592 new recoveries.

To date, the ministry reports a total of 9,573 COVID-19 cases of which 4,365 are active, 602 deaths and 4,606 recoveries. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June. On 17 June, the lockdown was extended to 29 June. However, to date, the partial lockdown is still in effect.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
