A Sudanese team has been awarded SAR100,000 (USD26,666) on 15 February 2025, after competing in Designathon 2025 in Saudi Arabia. The team, known by their competition name, ‘Makanz’, won first place for their project ‘Hawdag’, in the Urban Transformation Track.

The team consists of post graduates and architecture students from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Khartoum (UofK). The five team members are Maram Mohamed Gaily, architect, graphic designer and visual artist; Khalid Abdelrahman, design architect; Nawal Abdallah Bakhet, architect, interior designer, children’s book illustrator and cartoonist; Zainab Osman, a 5th year architecture student, artist and graphic designer; and Morlana Ahmed, a 5th year architecture student and graphic designer.

Their award-winning project, ‘Hawdag,’ is an interactive shading element with a heat protection system designed to aid urban transformation and enhance the walking experience in hot-climate countries while integrating cultural heritage through its patterns.

The third edition of Designathon took place in Riyadh from 13 to 15 February 2025. Designathon 2025 entered the Guinness World Records for the most participants in a design hackathon worldwide.

Organised by the Architecture and Design Commission, Designathon 2025 is a hackathon aimed at designing innovative solutions to challenges through creative thinking focused on empowering people to encounter global challenges. The initiative brings together 500 interested participants to create a better environment and contribute to community development by forming collaborative teams. Participants will follow the co-design and design thinking approaches, working over three days.

Many took to social media to celebrate the win of the Sudanese team, including Maram, one of the team members. They were mistaken for a family by social media users when the parents of one member joined the team on stage to receive the award and celebrate the win.
