Sudan Reports 134 New COVID-19 Cases; 1,661 Total Cases and 80 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 134 new COVID-19 cases and six new deaths on Tuesday, 12 May 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 1,661 and the total number of deaths to 80.

According to the ministry, out of the 134 newly reported cases, 104 are from Khartoum, 21 from El Gezira, eight from El Gadarif, and one from Sennar. Out of the six newly reported deaths, four are from Khartoum, one from El Gezira, and one from Sennar.

The ministry also reported 12 new recoveries. To date, 173 have recovered.

Out of the total 1,661 positive cases in Sudan, 1,354 are from Khartoum, 85 from El Gezira, 62 from North Kordofan, 52 from El Gadarif, 43 from Sennar, 17 from South Darfur, eight from River Nile, seven from Ash Shamaliyah, six from Kassala, five from West Kordofan, five from North Darfur, four from White Nile, four from West Darfur, three from Red Sea, two from East Darfur, two from Central Darfur, one from Blue Nile, and one from South Kordofan. To date, all of Sudan’s 18 states have COVID-19 cases.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government also announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. However, majority of the private and public sectors are closed for three weeks with the exception of those in the healthcare, and food and beverage sectors. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

The Federal Ministry of Health recently launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
