How to Help the People of Sudan?

Sudan is currently undergoing a brutal war that has left more than 12,000 people dead, more than 5.8 million internally displaced and more than 1.5 million others fleeing the country as refugees. According to the UN, the war threatens the world’s largest hunger crisis, warning 5 million are at risk of starvation.

Here are local and international organisations and campaigns that need your donations to help provide emergency aid to the millions affected by the ongoing war in Sudan:

Barana Hanabneiho Organisation (BHO)

Originally established in 2019 to help rebuild and maintain schools in Sudan, following the war in Sudan, Barana Hanabneiho Organisation (BHO) launched their Urgent Relief Campaign for Sudan to help provide food packages and other basic necessities such as blankets to displaced families in Halfa, Gadarif and Sinnar.

Darfur Women Action Group (DWAG)

Hadhreen (7adhreen)

Hadhreen is a local initiative that was established by a small group of Sudanese youth in 2015. Since its inception it continued to work in a variety of sectors, most notably emergency response, health, and in supporting vulnerable groups. It was formally registered as a non-governmental organisation in August 2021. Currently, Hadhreen is providing iftar meals for those fasting as well as meals for those in need throughout the war.

Nas Al Sudan

Nas Al Sudan is a Sudanese platform that provides equitable access to essential resources to the Sudanese community. While their primary focus is on education, they create a centralised social hub that fosters impactful responses to the impacts of the war in Sudan by the international Sudanese community.

Sadagaat Charity Organisation

Sadagaat is a registered charity of the Voluntary and Humanitarian Action Commission, which has been active in assisting vulnerable groups for more than 15 years, during which many successful projects, whether seasonal or ongoing, have been implemented through the support of philanthropists from within and outside Sudan. Following the war, Sadagaat has been providing meals to those in need in various parts of Sudan.

Sudanese American Medical Association (SAMA)

Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA)

Following the war, the Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) has played a vital role in rebuilding and transforming lives. Sudanese Diaspora Network (SDN)

Sudanese Diaspora Network (SDN) is a Sudanese global hub to unify, mobilise, and empower the youth towards a better, more sustainable Sudan. Following the war, SDN launched the Sudan Benefit Fundraiser where it has been collaborating with Fill A Heart, who are supporting hospitals with medical equipment in Sudan and vulnerable families in Egypt. The Sudan Tarada Initiative and the Save Al Geneina Initiative by Sadiea, are local initiatives with numerous campaigns directly aiding refugees and displaced people. They deliver food, medicine and other emergency supplies.

Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS)

SRCS was established by government decree in 1956 and recognised as a National Society and accepted into the movement the following year. The Society has 15 branches and more than 75 units across Sudan, with an active volunteer base of some 35,000. SRCS operates throughout Sudan, in what are often extremely difficult conditions caused by a succession of internal armed conflicts, including in Darfur, South Kordofan, Abyei and Blue Nile.

Sudan Solidarity Collective (SSC)

A volunteer collective based out of the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada, dedicated to advocacy, community building and fundraising. Following the war, SSC launched the Sudan Solidarity Fund, raising funds for Emergency Response Rooms (ERR) and ERR communal kitchens.

Takaful Organisation

Takaful is charity organisation led by voluntary youth that aims to support the student communities in particular and some segments of the surrounding society. Following the war, they’ve been working on providing meals in neighborhoods where there is a shortage of food and water.

International organisations:

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF Sudan)

According to MSF Sudan, fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people in Sudan, where we respond by providing medical care for malnutrition, diarrhoeal diseases and malaria. At a project in Sortoni, MSF provides treatment via outpatient and inpatient consultations. The project also provides nutritional services and vaccinations. At Dar Zaghawa, four of their health centres offer medical care, with a particular focus on mothers and children. MSF also treats visceral leishmaniasis (also known as kala azar) in Al Gedaref State, eastern Sudan. This parasitic disease, which is transmitted by sandflies, has a 95% mortality rate if it is not treated.

International Committee of the Red Cross in Sudan (ICRC Sudan)

The ICRC has been present in Sudan since 1978 helping people affected by the conflict in Darfur, Blue Nile and South Kordofan, and promoting international humanitarian law (IHL). Their work, independently or in cooperation with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS), includes supporting hospitals and health facilities with equipment and supplies, working with local water authorities on improving people’s access to clean water, and supporting the authorities who provide rehabilitation services for people with disabilities. ICRC Sudan provide displaced people in conflict-affected areas with emergency assistance, distribute seeds and tools to farmers, and vaccinate pastoralists’ livestock against disease. ICRC Sudan are helping families separated by conflict or displacement keep in touch, and have facilitated the release of detainees upon request of the parties. ICRC Sudan have given former detainees clothes and paid for their transport to go home.

UNICEF Sudan

UNICEF and its partners are on the ground delivering lifesaving services and supplies to vulnerable children and families. UNICEF’s Humanitarian Action for Children appeal helps support the agency’s work as it provides conflict- and disaster-affected children with access to water, sanitation, nutrition, education, health and protection services.
