COVID-19 Cases in Sudan Rise to 12

The Federal Ministry of Health has announced two new COVID-19 cases in Sudan on 5 April 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country to 12.

One of the patients is an 11-year-old girl, the youngest to test positive for COVID-19 in Sudan. She is the daughter of patient #9 who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier last week. According to the ministry, she is asymptomatic and in good condition. She was tested on 3 April and the test came back positive on 5 April. She along with the other COVID-19 patients is in quarantine in Jabra Hospital.

The second patient is a 67-year-old non-Sudanese man who came from India via Dubai International Airport on Emirates Airlines on 15 March. He began to show symptoms on 21 March but reported his symptoms to health authorities on 1 April. He was tested on 2 April and the test came back positive on 5 April. He is also being treated in quarantine in Jabra Hospital.

With 88 beds, the hospital is receiving all COVID-19 cases including suspected, confirmed and severe cases that require ICU admission. The hospital also includes an isolation room. Two of the 12 COVID-19 patients have died.

On 5 April 2020, South Sudan confirmed its first case of COVID-19. The patient is a 29-year old woman who arrived in South Sudan from Netherlands via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 28 February 2020. She is being treated in isolation.
