Forces of Freedom and Change Calls for Three-day Nationwide Civil Disobedience in Sudan

Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC), Sudan’s main opposition coalition, called on Monday, 17 January 2022 for civil disobedience across the country, after at least 7 protesters were killed by police forces on the anti-coup protests on Monday, 17 January 2022.

The death toll on Monday marked one of the bloodiest days since the 25 October coup. As a result, nationwide civil disobedience will take place for three days starting Tuesday, 18 January to Thursday, 20 January 2022.

According to Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors, a group of medics aligned with the protest movement, many others were being treated for injuries at hospitals.

Security forces fired teargas as they blocked thousands of protesters from advancing on presidential palace, and several injured civilians could be seen bleeding heavily in the street.

Since the military coup led by General Abdel Fattah Al Burhan took place in 25 October 2021, at least 71 protesters have been killed in anti-coup protests. Police forces have used teargas, gunfire, live ammunition, stun grenades to disperse demonstrations against a coup.

Since the coup, FFC, along with Sudanese Professionals’ Association (SPA), began a campaign of anti-military protests where tens of thousands of protesters have taken part on regular ‘Millions Marches’.

The coup dismantled the Sovereign Council and ended a military-civilian power-sharing arrangement, which came into place after the 2019 revolution saw the fall of former Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir.

The coup also saw the arrest of Prime Minister Abballa Hamdok and other civilian members of the Sovereign Council. They were later released and Hamdok was reinstated; however, he later resigned after many protested against a new agreement between Hamdok and Al Burhan.
