Freedom Bridge: South Sudan’s First Permanent Bridge Over Nile

South Sudan has officially opened the first permanent bridge over the River Nile on Thursday, 19 May 2022 in attendance of South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, the Kenyan presidential candidate and AU infrastructure envoy Raila Odinga, as well as the head of Japan’s International Cooperation Agency Tanaka Akihiko.

The 560-metre long Freedom Bridge in Juba was constructed using a grant from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the government of Japan’s aid agency. According to President Salva Kiir, the Freedom Bridge is a symbol of long and lasting friendship between the people of Japan and South Sudan.

Freedom Bridge replaced a bridge that was fragile and dangerous to cross. Construction on the new bridge began in 2013 but had been suspended multiple times because of political state of the country as well as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Useful for both pedestrians and vehicles, the aim of Freedom Bridge is to improve traffic congestion in Juba.

Many took to social media to comment on the opening of Freedom Bridge.
