Although the two countries lank row, they are not the lowest ranked passports. Afghanistan ranks the lowest at 103, enjoying visa-free entry to 27 countries. It is followed by Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen, Nepal, Palestine, North Korea, Bangladesh and Libya.

The highest ranked passport and recognised as the most powerful passport is Singapore, which enjoys visa-free entry to 192 destinations, more than any other country in the world. It is followed by Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Finland, France, Japan, Luxembourg, South Korea and Sweden.

The Henley Passport Index is the original, authoritative ranking of all the world’s passports according to the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. The index is based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) – the largest, most accurate travel information database – and enhanced by Henley & Partners’ research team. Expert insights regarding the latest ranking are available in the Global Mobility Report 2023 Q3.

The Henley Passport Index compares the visa-free access of 199 different passports to 227 travel destinations. If no visa is required, then a score with value = 1 is created for that passport. The same applies if you can obtain a visa on arrival, a visitor’s permit, or an electronic travel authority (ETA) when entering the destination.

Where a visa is required, or where a passport holder has to obtain a government-approved electronic visa (e-Visa) before departure, a score with value = 0 is assigned. This also applies if you need pre-departure government approval for a visa on arrival.

The total score for each passport is equal to the number of destinations for which no visa is required (value = 1).
