Sudan Announces Cabinet Reshuffle

Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok announced a cabinet reshuffle on Monday, 8 February 2021 in a televised news conference in Khartoum.

Hamdok appointed Mariam Sadiq Al Mahdi, the leader of the popular Umma Party and daughter of the late former prime minister Sadiq Al Mahdi, as foreign minister. He also appointed Darfur rebel leader Gibril Ibrahim as finance minister.

There are new appointments; however, some ministers remain in the cabinet. Here are the highlights of the 25 appointments:

New appointments:

Mariam Sadiq Al Mahdi as Foreign Minister

Gibril Ibrahim as the Minister of Finance

Khalid Omer Yusif as the Minister of Cabinet Affairs

Ibrahim Al Sheikh as the Minister of Commerce and Industry

Hamza Baloul as the Minister of Culture and Information

Remaining:

Nasredeen Abdulbari as Minister of Justice

Professor Intisar Soghayroun Elzein as the Minister of Higher Education

Nasr Eldeen Mofarih as the minister of Religious and Endowments Affairs

Professor Yasir Abbas as the Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources

Departing:

Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Lina Al Sheikh Mahjoub

Minister of Sports and Youth Wala Isam Elboushi

Minister of Commerce and Industry Madani Abbaas

Minister of Culture and Information Faisal Mohamed Salih

This is the second cabinet reshuffle that has taken place since the military-civilian Sovereign Council, led by Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, came into power in August 2019. The most recent cabinet reshuffle took place in July 2020.
