Sudan: Floods in the Midst of War

As fighting continues between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to cause mass destruction and exodus, floods due to heavy rain have been reported across Sudan, inflicting further suffering on communities already vulnerable due to ongoing conflict.

Thousands of people, mostly internally displaced persons (IDPs), have been affected as heavy rains and floods occur in Kassala, Sennar, Al Geizera, East Darfur, North Kordofan and more. At least 50 people have been killed across Sudan.

Kassala and neighboring towns have been most affected, impacting more than 10,000. According to UN agencies, around 400 shelters in refugee camps have been damaged.

Floodwaters have submerged roads, and damaged water and sanitation infrastructure, forcing many IDPs to live in the open along roadsides without access to food, drinking water or sanitation. There are rising fears of outbreaks of deadly water-borne diseases.

Fighting broke out between SAF and RSF on 15 April 2023, leaving more than 150,000 people dead, and according to IOM, at least 9.9 million people have been internally displaced across all 18 states in Sudan. In total, some 12 million have been forced to flee their homes in Sudan, with more than 2 million crossing borders into neighbouring countries, principally to Chad, South Sudan and Egypt.

Many took to social media to highlight the floods in Sudan, expressing disappointment over the lack of media coverage and humanitarian aid.
