Sudan Reports 213 New COVID-19 Cases; 7,220 Total Cases and 459 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 213 new COVID-19 cases and 12 new deaths on Friday, 12 June 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 7,220 and the total number of deaths to 459.

The ministry also reported 54 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 2,610.

On 1 June, the Sovereign Council extended the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum until 18 June 2020.

According to the ministry, out of the 213 newly reported cases, 150 are from Khartoum, 21 from El Gezira, 11 from North Darfur, 10 from El Gadarif, nine from the White Nile, six from Sennar, one from Kassala and one from West Kordofan. Out of the 20 newly reported deaths, seven are from Khartoum, seven from El Gezira, four from the Red Sea, one from Sennar and one from Kassala.

Out of the total 6,220 positive cases in Sudan, 5,501 are from Khartoum, 657 from El Gezira, 198 from El Gadarif, 150 from Sennar, 145 from North Kordofan, 117 from North Darfur, 96 from the White Nile, 78 from the Red Sea, 63 from Kassala, 57 from the River Nile, 36 from South Darfur, 28 from West Darfur, 26 from Ash Shamaliyah, 21 from West Kordofan, 19 from East Darfur, 17 from the Blue Nile, seven from South Kordofan and four from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
