Sudan Reports 215 New COVID-19 Cases; 5,714 Total Cases and 333 Deaths

The Federal Ministry of Health has reported 215 new COVID-19 cases and 12 new deaths on Wednesday, 3 June 2020, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in Sudan to 5,714 and the total number of deaths to 333.

The ministry also reported 114 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,825.

On Monday, 1 June 2020, the Sovereign Council has announced the extension of the partial lockdown imposed in Khartoum for an additional 14 days until 18 June 2020. 

According to the ministry, out of the 215 newly reported cases, 167 are from Khartoum, 20 from El Gezira, 10 from the White Nile, six from Sennar, five from the Red Sea, three from North Nordofan, two from West Kordofan, one from the River Nile, and one from El Gadarif. Out of the 19 newly reported deaths, 12 are from Khartoum, two from El Gezira, two from Ash Shamaliyah one from Sennar, one from the River Nile and one from the Red Sea.

Out of the total 5,714 positive cases in Sudan, 4,480 are from Khartoum, 440 from El Gezira, 170 from El Gadarif, 140 from North Kordofan, 122 from Sennar, 68 from North Darfur, 67 from the White Nile, 52 from Kassala, 35 from South Darfur, 26 from West Darfur, 25 from the River Nile, 20 from Ash Shamaliyah, 18 from Red Sea, 16 from East Darfur, 14 from West Kordofan, 11 from the Blue Nile, six from South Kordofan and four from Central Darfur. As of 9 May, all of Sudan’s 18 states have reported COVID-19 cases.

A three-week lockdown was imposed on Khartoum on 18 April 2020. Acting as a curfew the lockdown allows people to move from 8 am to 1 pm to get their daily supplies. On 24 April, Sudan has extended the lockdown to other states including South Darfur, North Darfur, El Gadarif and Red Sea.

On 8 May, the Sudanese government announced that the lockdown in Khartoum will extend for 10 more days. On 18 May, Sudan has announced that the lockdown will be extended by an additional two weeks from 19 May. On 1 June, the partial lockdown has been further extended to 18 June.

The Federal Ministry of Health launched a website covid19sd.info dedicated to sharing statistics and latest information on COVID-19 cases in Sudan.

The ministry stressed the importance of citizens committing to and applying preventive measures and reporting suspected cases. To answer all questions related to COVID-19, a government-sponsored call centre has been established for all residents of Sudan, operating 24/7. Call centre: 221 or 9090.
