Sudanese and South Sudanese Amongst 100 Most Influential Young Africans 2020 List

Avance Media and Africa Youth Awards, a leading PR and rating firm, have announced the 5th annual publication of the 100 Most Influential Young Africans 2020. The list is curated to recognise young Africans for their outstanding contributions towards the development of Africa in a diverse range of fields.

Arranged in alphabetical order, the list features notable personalities such as Nigerian singers Davido and Burna Boy, Ghanaian singer Stonebwoy, Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah, and Nigerian footballer Asisat Oshoala.

With a record 49 females and 51 males represented from 29 African countries, with Nigeria recording the highest representation with 21 young achievers, followed by Ghana, Kenya and South Africa recording a representation of 10 young people each.

From Sudan, there are five representatives (in order of appearance on the list) including poet and activist, Emtithal Mahmoud (41); fashion and creative director, Hadeel Osman (47); UN Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change, Nisreen Elsaim (67); and Sudan’s Minister of Youth, Wala’a Essam Al Boushi (99).

Representing South Sudan is Nelson Kwaje, the director of Defy Hate Now (64), a community-based organisation in Sudan that works on providing community-based and data-driven solutions to the problem of hate speech, disinformation and misinformation. 

Nominations for the 2020 Africa Youth Awards opened to the public on 2 October 2020. The criteria for selection included excellence in leadership and performance, personal accomplishments, commitment to sharing knowledge, breaking the status quo, and being an accomplished young African.

Launched in 2014, the Africa Youth Awards recognises and appreciates young Africans like Dr Ahmed Musa, Sara Nana Yeboah, Ashish Thakkar, Aya Chebbi, and many more for their achievements. Greater opportunities have been and are being presented to them, which has enabled them to continue what they have started and use their stories and experiences to impact the lives of other young Africans across the world.
