On 13 September 2023, TIME, the American news magazine based in New York City, published its annual TIME100 Next list with Sudanese art curator Duaa Tariq making the list.

Divided into five categories – Artists, Phenoms, Innovators, Leaders and Advocates – Tariq is on the 2023 TIME100 Next under the Advocates category for helping organise protests during the Sudanese Revolution in 2019 as part of a neighbourhood resistance committee and the founder of ColorSudan, an art group which has been decorating the streets of Sudan with rebellious graffiti during the revolution and now as the country is in war.

‘In 2019, when the people of Sudan brought down the military dictatorship that had ruled the African nation for 30 years, it was by that rare thing: a peaceful, leaderless revolution. The movement was guided by both the professional class and grassroots activists like Duaa Tariq, who helped organise protests as part of a neighbourhood resistance committee and, as a founder of the socially conscious art group ColorSudan, seeded a path forward,’ wrote TIME’s Karl Vick.

Commending Tariq’s recent activism, Vick added, ‘In 2021, the military returned to power in a coup, and this year turned Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, into a war zone. ColorSudan responded with antiwar graffiti in the streets and drawing sessions to help children deal with trauma, efforts originating from the emergency-response rooms where residents keep the half-emptied capital running and a movement alive. By day, locals distribute what Tariq calls “decolonised and localised aid.” Night finds her among the young activists moving through the neighbourhood chanting, “You’re safe. Don’t be scared … Even when it gets dark and ugly, we are here around you.”’

Tariq joins the list along with A-listers Nigerian singer Tems, American actor Tyler James Williams, American-Egyptian actor and comedian Ramy Youssef, American rapper Ice Spice, American singer Kali Uchis, American model Hailey Bieber, and more. TIME100 Next is an annual franchise recognising the rising leaders in health, climate, business, sports, the arts and more. TIME100 Next was launched in 2019 as part of TIME’s own effort to evolve how they tells stories. Traditionally, with efforts such as Person of the Year and TIME100, TIME has used the power of their spotlight to draw attention to those who have achieved peak influence in their fields.

To make the TIME100 Next list, research and reporting from across TIME’s global network of editors and correspondents takes place. They sift through hundreds of suggestions and then meet each week to debate who belongs on the list. ‘Through this process, we get to know so many extraordinary leaders who are creating change across the world. Our hope is that this list offers a glimpse into their important work,’ said Cate Matthews, a TIME editorial director.
